2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Trim Guide: Every Trim, Engine, and Configuration Explained

New 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 in Weatherford, TX

The 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 is a sixth-generation redesign, not a refresh. GMC simplified the lineup to six trims, dropped the SLE and SLT entirely, and introduced two all-new V8 engines alongside an upgraded TurboMax four-cylinder and the returning Duramax diesel.

Here is what you need to know before you buy. When you’re done reading, we invite you to explore our full GMC Sierra 1500 inventory, priced transparently with No Dealer Adds*.

At a glance:

  • Six trims: Pro, Elevation, AT4, Denali, AT4X, Denali Ultimate

  • Four engines, all paired with a 10-speed automatic

  • Maximum towing: 13,500 lbs

  • Maximum payload: 2,310 lbs

  • Starting MSRP (4WD Crew Cab): $51,295 to $87,895

The Six Trims

Pro — $51,295 (4WD Crew Cab)

The work-truck entry point. Not stripped down. Standard equipment includes:

  • 16.3-inch infotainment display

  • Adaptive Cruise Control

  • HD Rear Vision Camera

  • Trailering Package

The Pro is the only trim available in Regular Cab, which is the only way to get the 8-foot long bed. Best for buyers who need maximum payload or bed space without paying for luxury content.

Elevation — $59,995

Targets the daily driver. Adds over the Pro:

  • Articulating center screen with hidden storage

  • Heated front seats and steering wheel

  • Dual wireless charging

  • MultiPro Tailgate with four built-in tie-downs

Available in Double Cab and Crew Cab only. The Elevation Double Cab 4WD is the configuration that unlocks the lineup's maximum 13,500-lb towing rating when properly equipped.

AT4 — $73,495

Where off-road hardware becomes standard, not optional. Comes with:

  • Factory 2-inch lift

  • Monotube shocks

  • 34-inch all-terrain tires

  • Auto-locking rear differential

  • Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance with trailering capability

Super Cruise is standard on the AT4 and every trim above it. Crew Cab only.

Denali — $76,795

The luxury trim. Key features:

  • Comfort-tuned suspension

  • Signature chrome grille

  • Three interior colorways, including Terra Summit and Twilight Harbor

  • Super Cruise standard

  • Available 6.6L V8 (one of only two trims that offer it)

Best for buyers who want premium appointments without off-road hardware.

AT4X — $85,495

The most capable off-road Sierra 1500. GMC updated it for 2027 with enhanced hardware beyond the AT4. The optional AEV Edition package adds American Expedition Vehicles suspension and body components for the most aggressive factory-backed build available.

Denali Ultimate — $87,895

The flagship. Adds the highest level of interior materials and driver assistance technology in the lineup. The 6.6L V8 is standard.

Four Engines, One Important Choice

Every engine pairs with a 10-speed automatic. Here is how they compare:

2.7L TurboMax (350 hp / 455 lb-ft)

  • Standard on Pro and Elevation

  • Max payload: 2,310 lbs (Regular Cab 2WD) — highest in the lineup

  • Max towing: 9,400 lbs

  • Best for: buyers who haul more than they tow

3.0L Duramax Diesel (305 hp / 495 lb-ft)

  • Most torque in the lineup

  • Max towing: 12,100 lbs

  • Offers sustained efficiency over long hauls — the diesel keeps the transmission settled and reduces heat buildup under sustained load in a way gas engines cannot match

  • Best for: buyers who tow regularly and cover highway miles doing it

5.7L V8 (402 hp / 428 lb-ft)

  • The towing king

  • Max towing: 13,500 lbs (requires specific build — see below)

  • Best for: buyers who need the maximum tow rating

6.6L V8 (481 hp / 501 lb-ft)

  • Most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in the light-duty segment

  • Available on Denali and Denali Ultimate only

  • Max towing is lower than the 5.7L due to added engine weight

  • Best for: buyers who want the Sierra to feel effortless, not buyers chasing the max tow number

Cab and Bed: The Decision That Changes Everything

Cab options:

  • Regular Cab â€” seats 3, Pro only, unlocks the 8-foot long bed and highest payload

  • Double Cab â€” seats 5, available on Pro and Elevation

  • Crew Cab â€” most rear legroom, available on all six trims

Bed options:

  • Short bed (5'9") â€” Crew Cab 2WD only, 62.9 cu-ft, best for daily drivers

  • Standard bed (6'6") â€” Double Cab and Crew Cab 4WD, 71.7 cu-ft, enables the 13,500-lb tow rating

  • Long bed (8') â€” Regular Cab only, 89.1 cu-ft, most cargo volume in the lineup

The highest payload configuration is a Regular Cab 2WD with the TurboMax, rated at up to 2,310 lbs. Adding 4WD, moving to a larger cab, or upgrading to a V8 all reduce that number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the 2027 Sierra 1500 lineup compare to previous generations?

The 2027 Sierra 1500 is a sixth-generation redesign with a tighter, more purposeful trim structure. GMC consolidated to six trims — Pro, Elevation, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate — giving each one a clearer identity. The result is less overlap between trims and more meaningful separation in features, capability, and price.

Which 2027 Sierra 1500 engine is best for towing?

It depends on how you tow. The 5.7L V8 achieves the highest rated towing capacity at 13,500 lbs, but only in a specific Elevation Double Cab 4WD build with the Max Trailering and Trailer Technology packages. The 3.0L Duramax diesel tops out at 12,100 lbs but is the better choice for buyers who tow frequently over long distances, thanks to its 495 lb-ft of torque and superior thermal efficiency under sustained load.
